Who is it for?

This course is aimed at all learners of a beginner starting level. The precise number of language hours required and course length will vary depending on your current knowledge of the language, if any.

What is it about?

This course will enable you to travel in and around an Arabic speaking country using some basic Arabic. The language acquired will help facilitate initial contact, both face-to-face and over the telephone, and enable a warmer interface with those you meet. Typically, you will be able to deal with practical functions such as hotel accommodation, transport (taxis etc.), restaurants, purchases, and be able to present yourself in Arabic on a social and business level.

What will I get out of it?

The Arabic Basic Survival course leads to a target language competency of CEF Level Pre-A1. You will gain the below competencies in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Speaking

At A1 level you will be able to:

  • Develop a repertoire of simple phrases for use in specific situations.
  • Interact in a simple way provided the other person is prepared to repeat or rephrase things at a slower rate of speech.
  • Ask and answer simple questions in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics.

Listening

At A1 level you will be able to:

  • Recognise familiar words and very basic phrases concerning; yourself, your family and immediate concrete surroundings when people speak slowly and clearly.
  • Follow simple and clearly-articulated speech, given time to assimilate meaning.

Reading

At A1 level you will be able to:

  • Understand very short and simple Arabic-language texts, and be able to pick up familiar names, words, and basic phrases.
  • Understand familiar names, words and very simple sentences, for example on notices and posters or in catalogues.

Writing

At A1 level you will be able to:

  • Write a short, simple postcard, for examples sending holiday greetings.
  • Fill in forms with personal details, for example entering your name, nationality and address on a hotel registration form.
